Hans-Georg Gadamer on History of Effect - Dictionary of Arguments

I 305
History of Effect/Gadamer: A truly historical thinking must take into account its own historicity. Only then will it not chase after the phantom of a historical object that is the object of progressive research, but will learn to recognize in the object the other of its own and thus the one as well as the other. The true historical object is not an object, but the unity of this one and the other, a relationship in which the reality of history exists as much as the reality of historical understanding(1).
[It is not a matter of] research developing such a historical question of the history of effects that is in addition to the one directly aimed at understanding the work. The demand is rather theoretical. The historical consciousness should become aware that in the supposed immediacy with which it is directed at the work or the tradition, this other question always plays a role, even if unrecognized and correspondingly uncontrolled. If we seek to understand a historical phenomenon from the historical distance that determines our hermeneutical situation in its entirety, we are always already subject to the effects of the history of the effect.
I 306
(...) we forget the whole truth of this phenomenon when we take the immediate phenomenon itself as the whole truth.
History: This is precisely the power of history over finite human consciousness, that it asserts itself even where one denies one's own historicity in faith in the method. The demand to become aware of this history of action has its urgency precisely in this respect - it is a necessary demand for scientific consciousness. This does not mean, however, that it can be fulfilled in a bad sense. That history of effect is ever fully known is an assertion that is just as hybrid as Hegel's claim to absolute knowledge, in which history has come to complete self-transparency and is therefore raised to the position of the concept.

History of Effect/Gadamer: How do knowledge and impact belong together here?
The consciousness of the history of effects is something different from the research
I 347
of the history of the effect that a work has, as it were the trace that a work draws behind it - (...) it [is] rather a consciousness of the work itself (...) and in this respect [does] have an effect itself (...).
>Reflection/Gadamer.
I 352
History of Effects/Gadamer: The consciousness in the history of effects (...) has the structure of experience. >Experience/Gadamer.
I 383
History of Effect/Gadamer: The dialectic of question and answer, (...) allows (...) to determine (...) more precisely what kind of consciousness the historical consciousness of the history of effects is.
>Question/Gadamer.
Admittedly, a text does not speak to us like a "you". We, the understanding ones, have to make it talk to us first. But it had been shown that such an understandable making to talk is not an arbitrary use of one's own origin, but is itself again related as a question to the answer expected in the text. The presence of an answer already presupposes that the questioner has been reached and called upon by the tradition (here: handing down). That is the truth of the historical consciousness of the effects. It is the historically experienced consciousness which, by renouncing the phantom of complete enlightenment, is open to the experience of history. We described its fullness as the merging of the horizons of understanding (...).
>Horizon/Gadamer.

1. Here there is a constant danger of "reporting" the other in understanding and thus misjudging its otherness.
